Mouthguards and Night Guards
Mouthguards offer good protection against teeth damage during sport activities presenting a risk. By holding all teeth together and providing cushion they also protect the soft tissues of your tongue, lips and cheek lining. Modern Mouthguards can be made of colorless translucent silicone which looks more natural allowing the real teeth color to be perceived.
Night guards are useful to protect the teeth against grinding during sleep. Grinding may cause your teeth to become more sensitive, crack, break, cause pain, and prematurely yellow and cause your gums to recede.
Be aware that mouthguards offer only the illusion of protection and may even be damaging if not properly crafted to your exact dental situation and needs by a professional.
Grinding or bruxism may be a symptom of a more severe condition and the use of a mouthguard can hinder a protective reflex caused by apnea for example.
